From time to time along our life’s journey, we occasion upon a fellow sojourner with whom we make a connection, almost immediately. It tends to be humility that connects us; seeing in the other a genuine desire to learn, grow, love, and inspire.

Born of modest means in Durham, North Carolina, he is the younger of two sons, to the late Thomas Vanhook, Sr. & Dorothy Novella Alston-Vanhook. Thomas Ruben Vanhook Jr. is such a sojourner. Among his many gifts, he has most notably applied his talent in the church as a minister of music, pianist, composer, teacher, workshop leader and many more titles. Thomas affectionally called, “The Choir Corrector”, music ministry spans over four decades; serving as music director for over 18 churches and 28 choirs throughout the Triangle. He is a member of the historic White Rock Baptist Church, in Durham, North Carolina, under the leadership of Dr. Reginald Van Stephens. However, the most important title to him is that of Inspirationalist! In 2022, he has added to his accomplishments, a published author, his freshman project “Pebbles on The Journey”.

Thomas is the former director and co-founder of the Greater Joy Ensemble, winners of the Waljo Award for Best Gospel Group. Under his guidance, the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics Gospel Choir, “Colours” placed as finalist in the McDonald’s Carolina Gospelfest and the Quaker Oats Voices of Tomorrow Gospel Choir Competition, both in Raleigh, North Carolina. Thomas also was honored at the Annual Bethune Recognition Brunch, sponsored by the Durham Section of National Council of Negro Women, Inc. Thomas’ Vocal Inspirations has reached beyond many denominations, speaking life to those that are broken.

In 2022, Thomas launched his social media ministry, “Vocal Inspirations”. Thomas’ influences include, Minister Kent R. Brooks, Dr. Paula D. Harrell, Mr. Oren Marsh, Jr. Reverend Richard L. Smallwood and Mr. Grover Wilson, Jr., Thomas is a hymn composer (Alleluia to Our King!) and poet (Singing Heart!). However, the most important title to him is that of Inspirationalist. Thomas has dedicated his life’s work to achieving a high level of artistry in whatever he does. It is this authentic artistry that has touched the lives of so many.
